Laozi’s health preservation is profound and simple. It advocates the unity of man and nature, the unity of form and spirit. It is a perfect health preservation theory that nourishes both form and spirit, and is in line with the health preservation thought of the Chinese medicine classic “Huangdi Neijing”.
These introductions are about two major parts of health preservation: one is physical health preservation, that is, nourishing the form; the other is spiritual health preservation, that is, nourishing the spirit.
From the perspective of Taoist health preservation secrets, the pursuit of health preservation that conforms to nature, and health preservation that can understand the nature, is to truly begin to approach the heaven and earth. Only then can we achieve the unity of man and nature. Everyone is a small universe, each with its own unique features.
And everyone receives more or less information and inspiration from nature and the universe. When the human body’s small universe is very consistent with the natural universe, without any deviation, it is the highest state of the unity of man and nature.
Taoism advocates the Three-Character Classic Method
“Three Go”: Laozi, the founder of Taoism, proposed in his book “Tao Te Ching” that health preservation must “go away from extremes, go away from extravagance, and go away from excess”.
This means that a person must get rid of extreme, excessive, extravagant desires and the lazy state of eating all day and doing nothing, and be pure in heart and desire, without selfish thoughts. This is not only a moral cultivation of being a person, but also a principle of health care.
“Three taboos”: Confucius, a great educator and thinker who asked Laozi about etiquette in the Spring and Autumn Period, advocated that “a gentleman has three taboos: when he is young, his blood is not yet stable, so he should be careful about sex; when he is strong, his blood is just strong, so he should be careful about fighting; when he is old, his blood is weak, so he should be careful about getting.” That is to say, indulgence, fighting and greed can all harm health, lead to the breeding of diseases and shorten life.
“Three Haves”: The classic work of oriental medicine, “Huangdi Neijing”, points out that if a person wants to get sick less or not get sick and achieve health and longevity, he must “eat in moderation, live regularly, and work in an orderly manner.”
Overeating, eating fatty foods, lack of sleep, not paying attention to the combination of work and rest, and irregular life can easily lead to a variety of diseases.
“Three Lesses”: Taoists summarize their health-preserving experience and summarize it as “few desires to nourish essence, few words to nourish qi, and few thoughts to nourish spirit.”
Full essence, sufficient qi, and vigorous spirit are signs of human health; lack of essence, deficiency of qi, and weak spirit are the root causes of premature aging. Therefore, paying attention to maintaining essence, qi, and spirit and achieving “three lesses” is the key to health and longevity.
“Three Cautions”: Taoist health experts propose that the key to health preservation is to be “cautious with food, medicine, and excitement. It is not uncommon for acute pancreatitis and myocardial infarction to cause death due to a full meal of delicious food;
Acute attacks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases due to emotional excitement also occur from time to time; if you do not take tonic medicines such as ginseng and deer antlers according to the specific conditions of your own constitution, it will not only be detrimental to your health, but also cause harm to your body.
